HR444 was killed by a cowardly Democratic party leadership pandering to a vocal minority of religious bigots. What a shameful day. They do it on an oral vote to avoid going on the record. The reason is the progressive forces in the party vote also... surprise, surprise. This whole episode is so shameful. Supporters of equality MUST organize to mount effective primary challenges against the cowards and show them that it is not just fear mongering bigots who can inspire dread in aspiring politicians at election time.

Duke the hypocrite

In 1/20 issue of "Midweek" Dan Boylan quotes Duke Aiona:
"I'm not in favor of gay marriage, but I've never said I was not in favor of civil rights for everyone. After all, I am a man of color. I understand the importance of protecting civil rights".

The disingenuous hypocrisy of opponents of HR444 is just astounding. I wonder if they even think about the stuff they say and what it means. Duke's comments remind me of when I was growing up in the 1960's... "personally I support civil rights and have have nothing against Negros (or Asians or Native Americans, etc.), but I don't think they should be allowed to go to school with my children or move into my neighborhood." Sadly, Duke thinks that his is the moral and Christian position.

Civil Unions For All!

Best solution to the Hawaii conumdrum on civil unions and same sex marriage would be to adopt a totally "civil" approach. I believe France does this. "Marriage" would be a totally religious status, and various religious denominations would have total freedom to marry or not marry who they see fit. For example, they could refuse to re-marry a divorced person (shades of Henry VIII and Catherine Aragon). However, to get any benefits such as joint filing of income taxes a couple would have to register as a "civil union" with the state. This might even solve the Proposition 8 type dilema, since "marriage" would confer no special status available only to heterosexuals. However, the history of discrimination is that people enjoy having special status over others. It empowers them. Despite the lip service paid to equality in this country, Americans actually hate the thought of being equal, especially with people they have been trained since childhood to mock, bully and despise. Opponents of HR444 seem to believe they have a point when they say it would force schools to teach children that LGBT relationships are acceptable and that LGBT children should be able to look forward to loving relationships someday with members of their own sex. Yeah! Duh! That is exactly the point. Children must be taught to hate...

Instead of talking about legalizing gay or same-sex marriage we should lay claim to the term “marriage normalization”… the proponents of Prop 8 and similar efforts think they have some big winning point when they say “the schools would have to teach that same sex marriage is normal and moral and acceptable”… Duh? Yeah? That’s the whole point, and it is normal and moral and legal in 5 states already. So, “marriage normalization” better reflects our efforts."

444 - Just Do It!

The motivation for this blog is simple. After 40 years of wondering when intolerance in America will end I am sick and tired of it! My tone is going to be purposefully strident. I will work to expose intolerance and force accountability on so-called progressives and Democrats who disingeniously take the "I have nothing against gay people, but..." Tomorrow the Senate votes of HR444. Interesting to see how many supposedly progressive Democrats try to weasel out of their support, and the lame reasons they give. Star Bulletin web pole has support for HR444 at almost 60%, but I have no faith in Hanabusa or even Tanaguchi, as both did a back sliding 2 step in last year's session.
